Bishop Mathias Kappil
The Diocese of Punalur was erected as new diocese from the Quilon Diocese with the papal decree Verba Christi on 21st December 1985 and appointing Msgr. Mathias Kappil as the first Bishop. He was still then the parish priest of St. Mary’s Church Punalur.
He was consecrated as Bisho on 13th April 1986 at his Alma Mater Potefiicio Athaneo Romano Urbaniana, Rome by Cardinal Josef Tomko
On May 18th 1986 solemnly started the administration of Punalur Diocese
The diocese of Punalur comprises the civil districts of Kollam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta, taluks of Pathanapuram, Punalur, Kottarakkara, Kunnathur, Mavelikkara, Karunagapplly, Chengannur
